55% of French priests aged 25–34 celebrate the Mass in the Roman rite. That’s according to figures reported by the French daily Le Figaro and the French pollster IFOP, headed by Jérôme Fourquet. Among French priests aged 75 and over, the corresponding figure is just 2%. However, the overall decline in the number of priests in France has been disastrous. France had nearly 40,000 priests in 1980. By 2025, that number had fallen to fewer than 12,000, with a median age of about 75.

Hosts from tabernacle scattered across a town square. On September 19, unknown perpetrators entered the Sacred Heart of Mary parish church in Guitiriz, Lugo, Spain, forced open the tabernacle and stole the silver ciborium containing hosts. They were later found scattered outside in the town square. The Diocese of Mondoñedo-Ferrol described the incident as a grave profanation of the Eucharist. The parish filed a complaint and the Guardia Civil opened an investigation. Investigators are reportedly reviewing security cameras from nearby businesses. Bishop Fernando García Cadiñanos will celebrate a Eucharist of reparation at the church on 29 September.

Funeral for a male dancer turns into a comedy performance. Dancer, choreographer, and social worker Thierry Parmentier, 74, was given a funeral in the Catholic church of Caldogno, Italy, on June 24. He had planned the event himself, including its music, choreography and performances. Belgian-born, Parmentier had lived in the Vicenza area for over 40 years and staged productions to raise funds for AIDS research. The church was filled with Doctor Clown volunteers, biodance and holistic practitioners, and stilt-walkers. Don Gigi Maistrello, chaplain to Vicenza prison, preached the homily. After the funeral, an animated procession accompanied the coffin to the parish centre, where the farewell continued with music, dance and performances.

Patriarch accuses Curia Cardinal. Syriac Catholic Patriarch Ignatius Youssef III Younan has accused Curia Cardinal Claudio Gugerotti, prefect of the Dicastery for the Eastern Churches, of helping orchestrate an effort to remove him. Emmanuel Macron’s decision not to attend the papal Eucharists during Leo XIV’s visit to France is in keeping with France’s state religion of laicism. Jacques Chirac did not attend John Paul II’s celebrations in 1997, nor did Nicolas Sarkozy attend Benedict XVI’s in 2008.
